A heavy downfall has submerged Ondo City, the
headquarters of West Local Government Area of Ondo State and hometown of
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, destroying properties worth several millions
of naira, SaharaReporters can authoritatively report.
The torrential rainfall devastated several household items and sank
many residential buildings, private offices and shops into gully
erosion.
It was learned that both private and commercial vehicles, including
the ones parked on the main road, were waterlogged during the downpour.
A SaharaReporters correspondent who visited the town reported that
several residents who were affected by the flood have been relocating to
other communities on the outskirts of the town.
One of the victims in the town, Babalola Ayedotun, who became furious
following the heavy downpour, said he lost his entire property to the
disaster.
“I am very sad. I have lost my whole life to this flood. Look at my
property being washed away into the erosion,” the pensioner said.
Another victim, Bisola Oyewole, a local petty trader, lamented over
the perennial rainfall, adding that those badly affected by the disaster
are those whose means of livelihood are hanging in the balance.
It was gathered that areas affected by the flood in Ondo town
included Holy Trinity Junction, New Town, Ore and Ife Roadblock,
and Itanla Junction among other popular areas.
Poor residents in the town have been calling on both the State and
federal government for immediate assistance while asking for a quick
response from the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA).
