Policemen attached to a private filling station in Owerri, Imo State, have foiled a robbery attempt by a four-man gang.
The four unidentified gunmen on Sunday attacked the filing station in Owerri, allegedly with the aim of snatching the day’s proceeds.
The incident, which took place at Ebere Links Ltd. filling station opposite the Imo International Convention Centre, Owerri, was said to have taken place at about 6.18pm.
According to an eye witness, the hoodlums drove into the petrol station but before they could do any damage, two policemen who were stationed at the station to provide security and orderliness foiled their efforts.
It was also gathered that both the policemen and the armed robbers sustained injuries as they exchanged gun fire.
It was, however, said that the stronger and more professional skills of the policemen who were said to be on red alert forced the armed robbers to flee.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the story.
He said that nobody was killed and that the robbers did not succeed in robbing the policemen of their arms and ammunition.
Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, however, said that the Police had launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers.
Enwerem further said the policemen and pump attendants who sustained minor injuries were later taken to hospital for medical treatment.
