The welfare of Nigerians who are victims of Boko Haram insurgency is
of utmost important to President Muhammadu Buhari, his wife, Aisha, has
said.
Mrs. Buhari said she has commenced efforts aimed at addressing the
unbearable conditions the residents of the Northeast have found
themselves following years of attacks by terrorists.
Mrs. Buhari made the remarks when she addressed a cross-section of
academics at George Mason University, in Washington, on August 4, a
statement on the institution’s website said.
Mrs. Buhari also said Nigerians can take solace in the fact that the insurgency had been defeated.
“We can now say we have successfully fought the Boko
Haram insurgency,” Mrs. Buhari said.
Mrs. Buhari said her visit would contribute significantly towards
addressing the challenges the Boko Haram victims were grappling with.
“I and my entourage are in the right place where our voices will be
heard,” she said. “Me being here tonight will change their condition
forever.”
Mrs. Buhari also spoke on education of girls in Nigeria and current plans to hold an international summit on the issue.
“Once a woman is educated, she will know how to take care of herself,” Mrs. Buhari said.
Mrs. Buhari was the guest of honour at a luncheon hosted by Mason’s
Office of Global Strategy, Office of Admissions, the College of Health
and Human Services, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
