Pedestrian bridge collapses and crushes a lorry On M20 in Kent

A pedestrian bridge over a motorway in Kent has collapsed after being hit by a lorry carrying a digger. 

The incident that took place between Junction 3 and 4 of the M20, in the Borough Green area, just after noon today, leaving one 50-year-old man needing hospital treatment.

Kent Police have confirmed the collapse was caused by a lorry crashing into the bridge and it is believed the crane arm of the digger smashed into the concrete section of the structure, crushing a passing HGV in the process.

Emergency services are still at the scene with an air ambulance also spotted flying overhead.

Reports suggests that the man taken to hospital was a motorcyclist who broke his ribs in the collapse.

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman said: ‘We had a call out at 12.10 following a report of a pedestrian bridge collapsing on the motorway.

‘We sent an ambulance, an air ambulance and an officer to the scene.

‘We are treating one patient. We do not know the state of his injuries but he likely to be airlifted to hospital.’ 

Pictures of the bridge show its walkway to flanked with blue railings, suggesting that it may have been closed for repairs. Locals have also claimed that the bridge has been closed for works for well over a year.
