In a recent interview with UK’s Channel 4 News, published by THE PUNCH, the Nigerian writer, who has lived in the US, said that pregnancy is a sacred state that a woman ought to be discreet about.
According to her, this is the reason she did not make it a public matter when she was expecting her child.
Chimamanda said, “I wanted my pregnancy to be something I shared with the people I love, with the people who know me. There is a kind of pregnancy as a trendy thing that I find very uncomfortable with and I deeply dislike expressions like ‘baby bump’.
“I find it very irritating. It was a very deeply introspective time, thinking about (how) my life is going to change forever and the enormousness of bringing a baby into the world. It was a sacred time for me and I wanted to share it with the people I love.”
Since the interview was published, Nigerians have gone on social media to criticize Chimamanda for her comment.
Below are some of the criticisms on Twitter:
Chimamanda is a woman with her own opinions..We all have that, Opinions I mean, you don’t have to agree with hers, form yours and stick to it.— Radio Olori (@radioolori) August 12, 2016

Many of the Nigerian men #onhere use Chimamanda as their feminist prototype .The “reasonable” feminist yet she’s not free from feminist hate— Nneokwu (@theAfroLegalise) August 12, 2016
Chimamanda gets away with misguided trash talk frilled with meritorious objectives because she’s the favorite child. Some of the commenters came to Chimamanda’s defence, saying:

Last on this tbh. Hate to say it in case you thought, but Chimamanda is not your mummy. She’s not here to tell you sweet things. Piss off.

You people and this Chimamanda’s rage that only you can see.
A woman cannot contradict your thinking except she’s an angry feminist. Rest.

I never know where people get this thinking that Chimamanda is an angry person. I swear to you, she is so free spirited and funny.— Mr Dalloway (@ShutUpKecy) August 12, 2016
Some people will rather stand and die for Chimamanda than stand and die for the truth. #EyeServiceOnTwitter

Nigeria actually doesn’t deserve Chimamanda.— Urek Mazino (@FantaBender) August 12, 2016
When Chimamanda tries to explain too much she runs out of breath, she’s out of time even before she begins.
