A MET police bomb squad BLEW UP a “suspicious package” that turned out to be a PESTO SANDWICH.
Officers closed off a busy high street on Sunday afternoon after a
brown paper bag was found on the pavement near The Shard and London
Bridge station.
Cops decided to carry out a controlled explosion of the sandwich which “splattered pesto and bread across shop windows”.
Eyewitness Adam Smith had tried to walk through Borough High Street, south London, but was stopped at a police cordon.
He tweeted: “Okay. Suspicious package was a pesto sandwich which has been splattered all over this building.
“Standing at the bus stop chuckling to myself as I keep seeing more
evidence of the sandwich explosion. There is pesto on the first floor
windows.”
Metropolitan Police confirmed that the street was closed for almost two hours during the operation.
“Police were called at 4.40 to Borough High Street to reports of a suspicious package.
“Officers attended and the item was found to be non-suspicious.
“The incident was stood down at 6.05pm.”
