A South
Carolina girl who contracted a rare brain-eating amoeba while swimming
at a popular local watering hole is losing her fight against the deadly
organism.
Hannah
Collins, 11, was exposed to the amoeba while swimming on July 24 in the
Edisto River in Charleston County, and on Tuesday health officials in
the state confirmed that a young girl had come in contact with Naegleria
fowleri.
They did not identify Hannah as the victim at that time.
Hannah
has been in the Intensive Care Unit at Medical University of South
Carolina putting up her best fight for the past week, but it seems like
that may not be good enough according to her family.
In
a heartbreaking message posted on the Facebook page created to keep the
public updated on Hannah's condition, the family wrote Thursday night:
'Good Evening All. We have all been waiting and praying for a miracle.
However, The Lord has his mysterious plans.
'There
is irreparable brain damage and MUSC has done everything in their
power. We are now waiting for her to join the Angels in heaven. As you
wait with us, please continue to pray.'
