Police parade eight-man gang in Calabar

The Cross River State Police Command on Tuesday paraded an eight-man robbery and kidnap gang that had been terrorising Calabar in recent times.
The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarter in Calabar, said the gang members were arrested at various locations within the Calabar metropolis.
Ozi-Obeh, who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Irene Ugbo, said on July 18 that a team of policemen from the Atakpa Police Station in Calabar led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Rasheed Afegbua, received a distress call after the kidnap of a businessman identified as Godswill Uduma.
He said the DPO immediately swung into action with officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad which led to the arrest of three of the suspects identified as Ademola Babajide, Bassey Effiom and another popularly called Edem Boy.
The police commissioner said during the gun duel between the kidnap gang and police operatives, Edem Boy was killed.
He said the corpse was later found at the scene and brought to the Criminal Investigation Department where he was identified by his two accomplices in police custody.
Ozi-Obeh said, “We are still searching for Eyen Uyo and Kingsley Okon who is the driver of the gang  as the investigation progresses”
He also disclosed that members of the gang identified as Christian Donatus (19) and Ubong Bassey Essien (20) were earlier arrested on July 15 after an armed robbery operation.
“On Friday, July 15 at about 2200 hours, operatives attached to SARS, state police headquarters, Calabar while on routine patrol arrested some armed robbers who had been terrorising and robbing various locations in Calabar metropolis.
“On July 16, one Williams Tony (20) was arrested with locally-made pistol by patrol men attached to the State Housing Police Station,” he said.
The police commissioner said investigations were ongoing, adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court.
“We will leave no stone un-turned in our effort to rid the state of the activities of miscreants. I therefore want to use this medium to warn all criminals and perpetrators of heinous crime to steer clear as they will not be spared,” he warned.
